The Epistemic Status of Human Sciences in Light of the Kuhnian Notion of “Paradigm”: On the Hermeneutic Impossibility of Theoretical Hegemony

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the epistemic regime of the social sciences by recurring to the schemata articulated around the notion of “paradigm” by Thomas S. Kuhn. In order to achieve this objective, the initial section of the article situates the term within the context of Kuhn’s work, with a particular focus on its sociological foundation. Once this groundwork has been completed, the debate on the paradigmatic status of the social sciences themselves will be explored. After summarizing the main positions in this debate (focusing on the multiparadigmatic perspective), we propose that theoretical plurality is not only inherent to the study of the social, but also constitutive of its own form of scientificity—suspended between a hermeneutic task and an experimental task linked to its complex yet undeniable empirical quality.
