Resumo
De acordo com John Rawls, a igualdade política exige que todas as pessoas tenham oportunidades iguais de exercer cargos políticos e influenciar as decisões públicas. Para atingir este objetivo, grandes desigualdades econômicas devem ser evitadas. Transmissões hereditárias sem restrições podem levar a uma distribuição de riqueza que ameace o igual valor das liberdades políticas. Portanto, neste artigo vou discutir como conciliar o valor igual das liberdades políticas com as desigualdades produzidas pelas transmissões hereditárias. Para isso, analisarei o que significa o valor igual dessas liberdades, como as concentrações de riqueza em geral, e as causadas pela herança em particular, podem minar esse valor, e que medidas institucionais podem ser postas em prática para atender a essas circunstâncias. Concluirei estabelecendo que as transferências irrestritas de herança implicam uma ameaça à igualdade política e que um imposto específico sobre a herança de riqueza é necessário.
